Review Fix Exclusive: Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson Talks Late Nite And More

Review Fix chats with Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson about his new work, “Late Nite.”

About Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson:

Jesse”JTJazz” Thompson, multi-talented composer, pianist and keyboardist, born in “The Land Of Funk” (Dayton, Ohio) attributes his humble beginnings in music to being captivated by a family of musicians: a father who was a professional drummer, Thompson’s mother—a church organist/pianist and his brother Marvyn Wheatley (who recorded and played with Parliament and Slave).  Industry influences were soul/funk legends The Ohio Players, Lakeside and Zapp featuring Roger Troutman.

Driven to continue the legacy of great musicianship, Thompson became a member of the popular Columbus-based, R&B/Jazz group NexLevel for several years. The collectives released two albums, a string of singles, and shared stages with countless notable artists.

In 2021, the impact of the global pandemic deeply inspired Thompson to write and release the up-tempo, feel-good melody, “Weekend Groove,” ft Althea Rene which catapulted the musician into solo-artist status. The well-received track has garnered close to 200K Spotify streams to date.

Thompson would go on to release a 7-song EP, in 2022, intriguingly titled The Inauguration of JTJazz (Jesse Thompson-the man behind the keys) marking the commencement of a new pathway, and birthing several singles from the project.

Judah Sealy, a rising creative within the contemporary jazz genre, is known for his unique sound that comes from a blend of R&B, jazz, gospel, neo-soul and funk…the common thread between himself and Jesse “JTJAZZ” Thompson.

Sealy’s smooth saxophone style is heavily influenced by Kirk Whalum, George Furlow, Gerald Albright, and Boney James to name a few.

With 2024 being a ‘leap’ year which some say is the year of inspiration, Thompson has resolutely followed his passion by keeping his legacy in music alive by teaming with heavyweight Producer/Guitarist Adam Hawley and collaborating with highly sought after Saxophonist Judah Sealy to create an alluring mid-tempo track entitled, “Late Nite,” which is available now on all digital platforms worldwide.

Review Fix: What Was Late Nite’s Recording Process?

Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson: The song “Late Nite” was a collaborative project featuring saxophonist Judah Sealy, produced and co-written by Adam Hawley. We recorded the song remotely in three locations (Los Angeles, Ohio, and Rochester). Each area was recorded individually by all three of us, the artists and musicians. This was possible due to today’s digital studio technology and the network. Adam provided the song’s foundation, and I created the piano and melody lines for the music, making it something to groove and vibe as a finished product.

Review Fix: What Was the Inspiration Behind the Sound?

Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson: The inspiration behind “Late Nite” was the drive to produce something smooth with a groove that would make you bounce your head, tap your feet, and chill instantly.

Review Fix: What is The Enduring Significance of Funk?

Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson: Being from Dayton, Ohio, makes Funk matter even more to me. It matters because it’s part of history—black history. Funk displays essential items such as syncopated rhythms, pocket grooves, behind-the-pocket grooves, and so much more, and it’s non-biased. So, no matter what culture listens to it, Funk’s presence represents feel-good vibes on a new plateau.

Review Fix: What is Your Personal Connection to Funk?

Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson: Again, growing up in Dayton made Funk part of my era and my life. And because my brother was a keyboardist for groups such as Slave and Sun and recorded with artists such as Parliament, Steve Arrington, and more, this naturally became a part of me. When you have been born and raised, or introduced to something like Funk, in that case, you never want to see it fade; it’s part of your identity and the musical universal language that can reach people beyond, play a significant part in someone’s life, and share history in a musical form.

Review Fix: What is  Unique About “Late Nite”?

Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson: This song is unique because it represents people going out, having a great time at night, and enjoying themselves musically. Also, with 2024 being a ‘leap’ year, which some say is the year of inspiration, I had to firmly follow my passion by keeping my legacy in music alive by teaming with heavyweight producer/guitarist Adam Hawley and collaborating with highly sought-after saxophonist Judah Sealy to create an alluring mid-tempo track entitled “Late Nite,” which is now available on all digital platforms worldwide.

Review Fix: What Was It Like Collaborating with Judah Sealy?

Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson: Judah Sealy is a rising creative artist within the contemporary jazz genre. He is known for his unique sound, which comes from a blend of R&B, jazz, gospel, neo-soul, and funk. Working with Judah Sealy was an honor and a privilege. He has such a great spirit and is a good brother. Working with him on this project was indeed a blessing.

Review Fix:What’s Next?

Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson: Next on my mission list for the year is to release another single, complete my entire project, and release my first Christmas EP. My purpose is to encourage people and guide our young people so they can be encouraged to pursue their dreams that align with their gifts and calling. I love to visit and talk to children and college students nationwide about music and its creative journey. Spending time with them is an investment in our future. It creates trust as it builds relationships, offering collaborative opportunities in an agile methodology for artists to work together on projects, make changes, and accomplish musical goals.

Review Fix: Any Closing Thoughts?

Jesse “JTJazz” Thompson: As we navigate music and creativity, we must address the need to encourage young individuals who may lack the self-efficacy to pursue their inherent gifts and passions. Fostering a culture of empowerment is vital, whether through a musical platform, educational setting, or community engagement. Educational approaches wield immense power in nurturing these budding talents by imparting knowledge and skills and instilling a mindset of possibility. Recognizing that healthy minds are the bedrock for honing gifts, talents, and passions, we embrace the journey toward self-discovery and purpose.

In this symbiotic relationship between mentorship and empowerment, we witness the transformative impact of guiding individuals toward a path where their unique abilities flourish. By intertwining music with mentorship, we craft harmonious melodies and cultivate enriched souls poised to contribute meaningfully to the world.

Through these endeavors, I am propelled forward by my purpose—a beacon guiding me to uplift, inspire, and empower. Every note played, every word shared, and every moment of mentorship echo the call to nurture a community, educational platform, and artistic venues where gifts are honored, passions are pursued, and purpose is lived out vibrantly.

In the tapestry of life, as I continue to flow with my purpose, may each encounter spark the flame of inspiration, illuminating the path for others to embrace their journey with self-efficacy as their guiding light. Together, let us forge a symphony of empowerment resonating across communities, platforms, and generations, uniting us in a collective pursuit of self-discovery, growth, and fulfillment. The melody of purpose plays on, inviting all to join the chorus of possibility, creativity, an unwavering belief in the transformative power of music, mentorship, and the human spirit.
